Project HOPE: RIC Clubs Unite to Support Communities Affected by the Ditwah Cyclone
In response to the devastation caused by the Ditwah Cyclone, students of the Royal Institute Campus (RIC) came together in a powerful display of unity and compassion through Project HOPE, a joint humanitarian initiative led by RIC’s student clubs and societies.
This collective effort brought together the Psychology Club, Press Club, Islamic Society, Engineering Society, Chamber Choir of RIC, Hindu Society, and the Entrepreneurs Club, all working with a shared purpose: to support families and individuals affected by the cyclone and to contribute meaningfully to ongoing relief efforts.
As part of Project HOPE, the participating clubs were proud to donate medicines valued at over LKR 100,000 to the Sri Lanka Red Cross Society Hospital, supporting urgent medical needs in the aftermath of the disaster. This contribution reflected not only generosity, but also careful consideration of the immediate health challenges faced by affected communities.
During the visit to the Red Cross Hospital, students were informed of a critical shortage of essential food items, highlighting the continuing needs on the ground.
These items are vital for sustaining displaced families and those who have lost access to basic necessities due to the cyclone. Learning about these shortages reinforced the importance of sustained support beyond initial relief contributions.
Project HOPE stands as a strong example of what can be achieved when student communities work together across disciplines, beliefs, and interests. Each club brought its own strengths and perspectives, but it was their shared commitment to service that made the initiative impactful.
Through this effort, RIC students demonstrated that compassion, responsibility, and social awareness are as important as academic achievement. Project HOPE was not only a relief initiative,
it was a reminder that solidarity and collective action can bring comfort and dignity to those facing hardship.
