The Royal Institute Campus (RIC) proudly hosted the inaugural Inter-Institutional Moot Court Competition (RICMC 2025) on 11 January 2026, marking an important milestone in RIC’s commitment to legal education and experiential learning.

The competition was held under the patronage of His Lordship Honourable Justice A. H. M. D. Nawaz, and was graced by a distinguished panel of judges. The panel included the President of the Court of Appeal, His Lordship Honourable Justice Rohitha Abeysurya, President’s Counsel Justice Shiranee Tilakawardane, former Acting Chief Justice, and Mr. Chandaka Jayasundera, President’s Counsel. Their presence added great value and prestige to the event, offering students rare exposure to the country’s highest levels of judicial expertise.

The competition also welcomed a special guest lecture delivered by Mr. Mahela Liyanage, Mr. Revan Weerasinghe, and Mr. Amila Siriwardana, who engaged participants on the topic “Unlocking Innovation: The Role of Intellectual Property in a Modern Sri Lankan Economy.” This session provided students with practical insight into the relevance of Intellectual Property law in today’s economic and innovation-driven landscape.

RICMC 2025 focused exclusively on Intellectual Property law, making it the first moot court competition in Sri Lanka to dedicate its entire problem and proceedings to this specialised area of law. The competition encouraged students to think critically, argue persuasively, and engage deeply with contemporary legal issues that are increasingly important both locally and globally.

State-of-the-Art Moot Court Facilities at RIC

A key highlight of the event was the use of RIC’s purpose-built Moot Court facilities, designed to reflect the structure and atmosphere of a real courtroom. Equipped with formal seating, judicial benches, counsel tables, and modern audio-visual support, the Moot Court provides students with an authentic environment to develop advocacy, research, and courtroom skills.

These facilities play a vital role in preparing aspiring legal professionals by allowing them to practise legal arguments, procedures, and professional conduct in a realistic setting. The successful hosting of RICMC 2025 demonstrated RIC’s readiness to serve as a national platform for high-quality legal training and competitions.

Through initiatives such as RICMC 2025, the Royal Institute Campus continues to strengthen its role in shaping future legal professionals and advancing excellence in legal education in Sri Lanka.
