I remain deeply grateful to the Royal Institute Campus (RIC) and the University of London Laws Programme for the solid academic grounding they provided. The high calibre of the faculty at RIC is reflected in the academic outcomes I was able to achieve. The foundation I received from RIC, including my stint as a tutorial assistant for company law, subsequently paved the way for me to successfully complete my LL.M. at Cambridge.
I like to think that I have been able to use my legal education, not only for my own advancement, but also in fulfilment of the foremost duty of every Attorney-at-Law: upholding the Rule of Law. I was privileged to have my grounding in legal practice under Mr Geoffrey Alagaratnam, PC., where I was actively involved in several cases of national importance pro deo, apart from general civil practice. These included successful constitutional law challenges relating to: (a) the Executive’s decision to end the moratorium on the death penalty; (b) the presidential pardon granted to former MP, Duminda Silva; and (d) legal proceedings seeking justice for victims of the Easter Sunday bombings.
I am currently a Senior Associate in the disputes team at Afridi & Angell, one of the oldest and most established law firms in Dubai, where I focus on cross-border commercial disputes. My practice encompasses international arbitration, primarily under the DIAC, ICC, LCIA, and LMAA Arbitration Rules, as well as international commercial litigation before the DIFC and ADGM Courts.
I encourage current law students to develop a genuine appreciation for the law and its role in society, and to savour the undergraduate years. I can attest to the fact that early sacrifices, and discipline in life and learning, will reap its rewards in due course.
